What is PGT-A?
Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) evaluates embryo biopsy material for chromosome copy-number abnormalities before embryo transfer during IVF. It is a selection tool, not a guarantee of implantation or a healthy birth.

How is the sample obtained?
Embryos are usually cultured to the blastocyst stage. A small number of trophectoderm cells \u2014 cells that contribute mainly to the placenta \u2014 are biopsied. The embryo is commonly vitrified while the biopsy is analysed.
What can the result show?
Depending on the validated assay and reporting policy, an embryo may be reported as euploid, aneuploid, mosaic, segmental or inconclusive/no result.
Does PGT-A improve every IVF cycle?
No. Evidence does not support treating PGT-A as automatically beneficial for every patient. The potential value depends on age, embryo number, reproductive history, laboratory performance and treatment goals. Counselling should be individualized.
What are the limitations?
The biopsy samples only a small number of trophectoderm cells. Mosaicism and biological differences between biopsied cells and the rest of the embryo can complicate interpretation. Technical limitations and no-result samples can also occur.
Is prenatal testing still recommended after PGT-A?
PGT-A does not eliminate the possibility of genetic or chromosomal abnormalities. Prenatal screening and diagnostic options should still be discussed during pregnancy.
